Abstract
Brief mention is made of the clinical manifestations of scurvy as observed in adults in an urbanised African community; the available radiographs in a selected group of 38 adult male patients with scurvy, under 55 years of age and with relatively severe clinical manifestations of the disease, were reviewed. Radio- logical abnormalities were most common in the spine and bones and joints of the lower limbs; these consisted essentially of osteoporosis of the spine with one or more compression fractures of vertebral bodies, osteoporosis (diffuse or patchy) of the long bones of the lower limbs, periosteal reaction on such bones, and joint changes secondary to solitary or recurrent hemarthroses. Keywords
