Abstract
X‐ray measurements in ErCl3 and ErI3 solutions indicate that there is a firmly held octahedral arrangement of H2O molecules around the Er3+ ion. In addition, there are present Er3+–Cl2— and Er3+–I2— ion‐pair complexes. Finally there is a large amount of order introduced into the structure by the presence of the ions, with evidence for an ``icelike'' quasi‐lattice. Keywords
