Abstract
The present study was undertaken on the localization of the oxidative enzymes in the synaptic regions of the spinal cord. Two types of synaptic contacts were observed, of which 1 is between a neuron and a number of processes of other neurons and the other is between the cell processes of different neurons. The former correspond to the end-bulb of Bartelmez, while the latter resemble the end-feet of Held-Auerbach. The oxidative enzymes such as succinic dehydrogenase, cytochrome oxidase and DPN diaphorase were demonstrated in the synaptic regions and these findings were corroborated by the similar distribution of granular mitochondria. It has been suggested that mitochondria by virtue of their enzymic equipment play a part in ion transport at the synaptic membranes.
