Abstract
The purpose of this report was to focus attention on one specific entity which may be associated with auto-immune hemolytic anemia[long dash]namely an ovarian teratoma. Hemolytic anemia associated with this type tumor may be active and destructive for years, but is cured completely by removal of the tumor. A case of auto-immune hemolytic anemia caused by an ovarian teratoma in a Negro woman with sickle cell trait is presented. The patient required frequent tranfusions and steroid therapy was not successful in ameliorating the anemia. Complete remission of the anemia followed teratomectomy. A review of the literature revealed 9 similar cases where an auto-immune hemolytic anemia was associated with a teratoma. In practically all of these, spherocytosis was prominent. Six of the cases were cured of their hemolytic anemia by removal of the tumor. Keywords
