Abstract
In this paper, the basic researches on the dynamics and the initiation of the movement of sand drifts under the wave actions are treated, to contribute to the establishment of the mechanics in beach process. The influence of the fluid acceleration to the initiation of the sand movement under water waves is analyzed theoretically by using the experimental results of the critical velocity for sand movement in unsteady closed conduit flows. A formula for the rate of sand drifts by wave action is proposed in the relationship between the critical velocity and the friction velocity of sands. The critical water depth for the movement of sediment is also discussed by introducing the influences of the fluid acceleration and the developement of boundary layer under water waves.
