Abstract
Following a review of the literature on quality of life indicators a comparative study of patients in a continuing care unit and a general medical ward showed that patients' needs and concerns are highly individualistic. The MacAdam assessment of suffering was found to be a useful diagnostic and therapeutic tool, particularly in the areas relating to a patient's mood or spirits. Keywords
