Abstract
Distribution patterns of small mammals in relation to major vegetational zones and interspecific interactions were studied at two sites in Essex County, New York, during August 1971 and 1972. Two live-trap grids sampled ecotones between upland coniferous, intermediate deciduous, and lowland coniferous habitats. Results revealed differences between the two sites in species composition and relative abundance. Napaeozapus insignis and Peromyscus maniculatus exhibited complementary relative abundances. No direct interspecific association was indicated. Peromyscus maniculatus, Clethrionomys gapperi, Napaeozapus insignis, and Tamias striatus exhibited statistically significant habitat perferences. Negative interspecific associations were noted between P. maniculatus and C. gapperi. Keywords
