Abstract
The problem of the interpretation of the mass defect curve is discussed in reference to the coupling of protons and electrons proposed by Latimer. Gamow's equation is modified by making the attractive energies the sum of the bond energies. For certain symmetrical nuclei approximate values for the mass defect may be calculated which are in good agreement with the experimental results. Keywords
