Non-Markovian Stochastic Resonance

Abstract
A theory of non-Markovian Stochastic Resonance (SR) is put forward in terms of linear response theory for non-Markovian stationary two-state renewal processes. From the derivation of a general regression theorem we obtain for weak periodic input signals explicit expressions for the characteristic measures of non-Markovian SR, the spectral power amplification and the signal-to-noise ratio, respectively. A typical benchmark of non-Markovian SR is a distinct dependence on driving frequency for both SR-quantifiers together with a strong suppression of the signal-to-noise ratio at small driving frequencies. The non-Markovian SR theory is elucidated for the gating dynamics of a potassium ion channel possessing an infinite variance of closed time intervals.
