The non‐completion of doctoral research in management: symptoms, causes and cures

Abstract
This paper examines the results of a questionnaire mailed to all Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded research students in management and to supervisors on the subject of non‐completion of research theses. It uncovers a variety of attitudes to research and barriers to completion of the research. There is agreement that completion rates can and should be raised but the weightings given to proposed solutions vary. Improved performance by research councils, institutions, supervisors and students are all examined as solutions to the problem. Better management of the research process within doctoral programmes by both supervisors and students could, it is argued, significantly improve completion rates.
