Abstract
A significant difference in incidence of proventriculus dilation was observed in a study of the effect of growth rate on the incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia in broiler-type chickens. This difference was related to the use of pulverized oat hulls in a ration to decrease nutrient intake and growth rate. Fiber content as well as texture may be involved. Dilation of the proventriculus, a problem in commercial broiler production when chicks were brooded on concrete floors without any litter, was corrected by small amounts of shavings. If birds are to be raised on floors without litter or in cages, consideration should be given to the texture and fiber content of the diet.
