Abstract
Double whirlpools above and below a black hole cause the beaming and double structure of radio sources. The evidence for the widely held view that gravitational energy powers quasars is reviewed. After a brief discussion of other models an account is given of the standard accretion disk and ways in which such disks may power galactic nuclei and quasars. Finally the problem of creating large black holes cosmogonically is considered. Keywords
