The chemical adsorption of a gas on a metallic surface can take place with or without nucleation. In this review we will especially refer to results concerning the adsorption of oxygen and sulfur on different metals where nucleation phenomena may be explained by the formation of two-dimensional surfacecompounds involving reconstruction of the metallic substrate.
