Abstract
To the Editor—The incidence of malaria in Brazil has increased 3-fold during the past decade, and nearly 631,000 cases were reported in 1999 (Fundação Nacional da Saude–Ministry of Health). Almost all reported cases of malaria in Brazil originate in the Amazon region, where a migrant population, great distances, and poor access to diagnosis and treatment are major barriers to the control of malaria. Migrant populations help to increase the dissemination of resistant parasites throughout the endemic regions and also contribute to the spread of the disease in malaria-free areas, thus increasing the risk for malaria outbreaks [1]Keywords
