A Study of Feedback in Aldosterone Secretion

Abstract
Experiments were carried out in conscious sheep which had a moderate sodium deficit as a result of loss of saliva from a parotid fistula.- The sheep had adrenal autotransplants and the rate of aldosterone secretion (6-8 μg /hr) was approximately 40-50% of the functional capacity of the gland to secrete this hormone. Under these conditions, intravenous infusion of aldosterone for 4-5 hr at 10 μg/hx did not reduce the rate of adrenal secretion of aldosterone. Intravenous infusion of Aldactone for 4-5 hr at a rate which completely inhibited the effect of aldosterone on the composition of parotid saliva did not alter the rate of adrenal secretion of aldosterone. The results do not suggest that the rate of aldosterone secretion is directly affected by the concentration of aldosterone in peripheral blood in a manner analogous to the feedback in the cortisol:ACTH system.(Endocrinology77: 501,1965)
