Abstract
In preoperative "force-feeding" studies with diets high in N, 11 patients undergoing extensive abdominal or neurosurgical operations were supplied 0.8 to 0.9 g. of nitrogen per kg./day, and in some cases with supplements of protein hydrolysates given by tube. This regimen produced a retention of an avg. of 92.2 g. of N for the first 5-day preoperative period. In practically all instances the positive balance was more than enough to compensate for the negative balance occurring in the 5 postoperative days. Tests for physical fitness, the ballistocardiograph and tilt-table test supported the clinical evidence that the patients were in better nutritional as well as physical condition. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
