Tacit Knowledge and Models of Innovation

Abstract
This paper reviews literature which clarifies the role of tacit knowledge in innovation. It then discusses the reasons for the continuing importance of tacit knowledge, despite rapid advances in codification. Models of innovation, however, appear to overlook the significance of the tacit dimension of knowledge, especially that associated with external advances in scientific knowledge. This is demonstrated by the results of a study of university/industry links in biotechnology, advanced engineering ceramics and parallel processing.
