Abstract
Prevalence of syphilis has declined from about 9% of the prisoners in 1951 to a little over 5% in 1956. The prevalence of gonorrhea, based apparently on smears, ranged from 7 to 12.5% of the prison population during this period. In prostitutes syphilis prevalence ranged from 13.5 to 16%, gonorrhea prevalence from 32 to 63%. Over 1/2 of the prostitutes examined gave a history of previous treatment for venereal disease. Most were under 25 years of age.
