Abstract
Results are presented for the scattering of neon atoms (obtained from a nozzle source) from a cleaved surface of lithium fluoride maintained at 150°K. The scattering patterns reveal well‐defined peaks resulting from coherent scattering. Inelastic scattering is also observed: (1) scattering due to the thermal motions of surface atoms giving streaks extending in the 〈100〉 direction from the elastic peaks; (2) incoherent or cosine scattering. A brief comparison with the scattering of argon atoms is made. Keywords
