Abstract
The dose-rate at any point outside a spherical homogeneous radioactive source is calculated assuming exponential absorption both in the surrounding medium and in the source. The integral expression so obtained is used to derive the dose-rate on the surface. Numerical values and approximate expressions are presented in the special cases of the source in a non-absorbing medium and a medium of absorption coefficient equal to that of the source. The errors involved in the various approximations are given. An estimation of the effect of scattered radiation by means of "buildup factors" is discussed.
