Abstract
Patients still had gastric hypersecretion and a positive reaction to insulin hypoglycemia after removal of the antrum. Both were abolished by vagotomy. In dogs with vagus-innervated total gastric pouches removal of the antrum reduced HCl output by 23%. Subsequent crushing of the vagi further reduced HCl by 70%. Antral function and release of gastrin are not essential to vagal secretory function but the gastrin mechanism may facilitate the vagi. Keywords
