Abstract
Ten N-methylcarbamate and 10 dimethyl phosphorothionate esters of various phenols and monoterpenoids prepared in the laboratory and evaluated for biological activity. In general, the carbamates and phosphorothionates of the substituted phenols were quite active, those of the monoterpenoids were innocuous to the test animals. The toxicity of the aryl-N-methylcarbamates and dimethyl aryl phosphorothionates to the house fly, Musca domestica L., was increased with piperonyl butoxide. In animal systemic studies the phosphorothionate of 6-chlorothymol was active against bed bugs, Cimex lectularis L., and Gulf Coast ticks, Amby-lomma maculatum Koch, while the carbamate and phosphorothionate of carvacrol were effective against bed bugs only. All the compounds in this study were of relatively low toxicity to white rats.
