Abstract
When a foreign substance is injected into a vein at a constant rate, it begins to recirculate before a concn. plateau is established. The cardiac output therefore cannot be calculated from the results of an expt. of this type. Diffusible substances such as Na thiocyanate do not pass quantitatively through the heart and lungs on their first circulation as do the blood volume dyes. Such substances should be used with reservation in calculating the cardiac output by the injn. method.
