Abstract
Rusty spot, a virus disease of cherries, is described. It causes rust-coloured spots on leaves formed in spring. Purple zones surrounding the spots soon break away and the spots fall out leaving holes in the leaves. Extensively affected leaves fall prematurely. Leaves formed in summer are symptomless. The distinctive rusty spots on Mazzard F12/1 cherry rootstock and some sweet cherry varieties and lack of symptoms on the variety ‘Lambert’ differentiate the disease from Prunus necrotic ringspot, necrotic rusty mottle, and European rusty mottle viruses. Keywords
