Computer Modeling of Intracranial Saccular and Lateral Aneurysms for the Study of Their Hemodynamics

Abstract
To the Editor: We read with interest the article by Burleson et al. (1) on computer modeling of intracranial saccular and lateral aneurysms for the study of their hemodynamics. However, the created impression of a novel technology deserves comment. Blood flow in aneurysms has been quantitatively studied for a long time. In the 1980s, the numerical method, as used in the actual report, was already in existence (3–6). At the University of Graz, the technique was applied during the years to various aneurysm settings. Three-dimensional flow, elasticity of the wall, and non-Newtonian fluid characteristics have been implemented in the simulations. The pressure patterns are a primary result of the Navier-Stokes solutions.
