Abstract
A system for analyzing 58 volatile halogenated and aromatic organics in drinking water is described. By applying the purge-and-trap technique combined with wide-bore capillary column gas chromatography, all target compounds except two pairs of coeluted compounds are separated and analyzed with a photoionization detector and an electrolytic conductivity detector in series configuration. Method accuracies range from 92 to 109%, and method precisions range from ±1% to ±10%. Method detection limits, except for a few analytes, range from 0.1 μg/L to 0.01 μg/L. The series configuration not only cuts the analysis time in half and reduces the cost of analysis, but also provides additional confirmation data for many analytes. An automated system is easily set up for routine monitoring analysis. Keywords
