Abstract
Ion implantation modifies the surface composition and properties of materials by bombardment with high energy ions. The low temperature of the technique ensures the avoidance of distortion or surface degradation of components. Wear resistance, evaluated by a lubricated Falex test, can be improved by up to four times and the surface hardness of hard chromium and cobalt/tungsten alloys can be increased by up to 40%, when an optimum dose of nitrogen is implanted. These effects are explained in terms of the formation of nitrides, which improve the load bearing capacity of the surface and its abrasion resistance. Keywords
