Abstract
The French Question, by Steven Philip Kramer The end of the Cold War and the unification of Germany produced fears on the part of the French political class about France's capacity to continue to play a role of political leadership in Europe. That leadership had depended to a large extent on France's special relationship with Germany. By late 1990, Mitterrand was attempting to strike a new balance between France's desires for national independence, European construction and the Atlantic connection.Keywords
