DUPUYTREN'S CONTRACTURE

Abstract
DUPUYTREN'S contracture was first shown to be a disease of the palmar fascia by Dupuytren just 120 years ago. Since that time an exhaustive literature has grown up about it, but knowledge concerning its exact etiology is still not complete, nor is there agreement as to the nature of the pathologic changes which are found in the excised fascia. There is less argument relative to the treatment. It is generally admitted that the condition should be managed surgically; no conservative measures have proved to be satisfactory. There is some argument among surgeons as to how extensive the surgical treatment should be. In general it can be said that most surgeons advise complete removal of the palmar fascia and of prolongations into the fingers if they are involved.
