Abstract
To the Editor: As part of a program to assess the quality of testing done outside the hospital or reference clinical laboratory, we recently studied the performance of home pregnancy-test kits in the hands of laypersons.Two hundred urine samples from urban adolescents were analyzed with the use of four pregnancy-test kits, all based on the detection of human chorionic gonadotropin: Hybritech's TANDEM ICON II and Eastman Kodak's SURECELL kits, which are designed to be used only by professional laboratory personnel, and Parke-Davis' e.p.t plus and Ortho Diagnostic's ADVANCE kits, which are advertised as home pregnancy-test kits.
