Abstract
Electrogenic properties of active transport in Nitella were examined by the vise of inhibitors and vacuolar perfusion. In the presence of ouabain and total darkness the membrane potential was decreased by 20 mV, the current at E = 0 decreased by 1-7 μA cm,-2, and the resistance was unaffected. Vacuolar perfusion with a solution identical to the bath had shown that the membrane potential was 30 mV and the short-circuit current measured in this study was 1-7 μA cm-2. The perfusion and inhibition results are compared and discussed in the light of other recent work. Keywords
