Abstract
In crosses of red fox (V. vulpes) and arctic fox (A. lagopus) the hybrid is sterile. Seminiferous tubules were teased from the testes of a hybrid and males of the parent spp. The red fox shows a chromosome number of 34, the arctic fox one of 52. At mitosis and 1st division the chromosomes of the former are larger. Within each sp. it is easy to pair the chromosomes. The mitotic figure of the hybrid shows 43 chromosomes, and at 1st reduction division there is a mixture of paired and single chromosomes. It is doubtful that mature sperms are formed in the hybrid. Keywords
