The Effects of a Group Guidance Program on the Self-Concepts of EMR Children

Abstract
Two hundred eleven educable mentally retarded (EMR) children aged 8 to 12 years were studied. Two independent variables were included and were examined using analysis of covariance for a randomized complete block design. The main independent variable consisted of two treatments: One group received 85 sessions of work with a DUSO group guidance program, and the second group was a recipient of individual teacher methods to improve self-concept. The blocking variable, the second independent variable, was the county in which the child was located. Pre- and posttesting were completed using the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale. No statistical evidence was found indicating that the standardized group guidance program was significantly different or more effective than techniques selected by teachers for improving the self-concept of the EMRs.
