Abstract
SEVERAL years have passed since Haynes and Berthet1 , 2 proposed a theory for the mechanism of action of ACTH in stimulating adrenocorticosteroidogenesis. Considerable research had been performed to test the validity of their theory. It seems advisable, therefore, to evaluate the present status of knowledge in this field and to determine the most fruitful approaches for future investigations. The response of the adrenal gland to specific treatments and to physiologic alterations may provide data that can be correlated with the mechanism of action of ACTH. Consideration of the differences in experimental design are of importance — for example, in vivo versus . . .Keywords
