Abstract
Fifty new reports of proctalgia fugax have been collected in a review of medical literature covering a period of ten years. An additional 56 cases, encountered by the authors during the same ten-year period, are added. The characteristic pattern of the syndrome remains unchanged and the treatment is essentially the same as formerly described. A procedure of value as a diagnostic aid is presented. It consists of reproduction of characteristic pain by the injection and distention of the submucosa of the internal hemorrhoidal area with 2.0 to 3.0 cc. of 5.0 per cent phenol in Wesson oil. Keywords
