Abstract
The processes leading to negative ion production in a hydrogen plasma are reviewed. Dissociative attachment of electrons to highly excited vibrational states of hydrogen molecules appears to be the most probable source of negative ions. The possibility of significant negative ion production via dissociative recombination of H/sub 3//sup +/ with electrons cannot be excluded. The survival probability of vibrationally excited hydrogen molecules in wall collisions may be a critical parameter in interpreting the data. Keywords
