Abstract
Twenty-five pairs of monozygotic bovine twins of beef breeding were fed on two rations, with one being high and the other low in concentrates, to average slaughter weights of slightly over 800 lb. Both members of some pairs were fed the same rations while in other cases pairs were “split” with one member receiving each ration. Estimates were made of differential response to the two rations through comparison of between-animal variation in pairs fed alike with the ration × pair variance in the split pairs. Ration × pair interactions were significant for growth rate, live-weight increase in relation to feed consumed and for some carcass characters indicative of intramuscular fat distribution.
