Abstract
Synopsis: The lithostratigraphy of the Brora Coal Formation is revised, so defining two new members, the Doll Member and the Inverbrora Member. A new section of outcrop, to the SW of the main outcrop, allows minor structural adjustments to be made to the line of the Brora fault. The sequence is interpreted as a fluvial sequence, initially dominated by freshwater, sideritic mudstones, passing upwards into organic-rich shales and coals. Some evidence of marine or estuarine conditions are found near the top of the sequence. The palaeoenvironmental significance of the sideritic beds is discussed.
