Abstract
Synopsis: The lithostratigraphy of the Brora Coal Formation is revised, so defining two new members, the Doll Member and the Inverbrora Member. A new section of outcrop, to the SW of the main outcrop, allows minor structural adjustments to be made to the line of the Brora fault. The sequence is interpreted as a fluvial sequence, initially dominated by freshwater, sideritic mudstones, passing upwards into organic-rich shales and coals. Some evidence of marine or estuarine conditions are found near the top of the sequence. The palaeoenvironmental significance of the sideritic beds is discussed. This publication has 13 references indexed in Scilit:
