Abstract
Photolysis of coniferyl alcohol produces a transient quinone methide. The rates of decay of this quinone methide have been measured in water, acetic acid, and propane-1,2-diol. The possible significance of the quinone methide in lignin biosynthesis is discussed. Keywords
