Abstract
Methods and procedures for detoxification from heroin dependency are reviewed. The history of opiate detoxification is briefly discussed, and contemporary and experimental procedures are surveyed. Research findings contrasting various contemporary approaches to detoxification that utilize methadone are presented as well as research findings from studies of different chemotherapeutic and other experimental methods; e.g., acupuncture, propoxyphene napsylate, propranolol, ascorbic acid, and clonidine hydrochloride. The authors conclude that detoxification fails as a treatment procedure for heroin-dependent individuals because it has not been found successful in producing satisfactory retention rates and lasting abstinence from opiates. Rather, detoxification is viewed as appropriate to the treatment process as a preliminary step and should be utilized to channel regular heroin users into long-term treatment.
