Assay Characteristics of Tannate Complexes of Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin

Abstract
Tannate complexes of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMS) were assayed by the ventral prostate weight (VPW) assay and by the ovarian ascorbic acid depletion (OAAD) assay. Assays were also performed by injecting single doses of tannated and untannated PMS and determining the magnitude of the response at various intervals. It was found that tannation increased the potency of PMS only slightly in the VPW assay and was without effect in the OAAD assay. The results obtained with single doses confirmed those obtained by conventional assays. The lack of effect of tannation on the potency of PMS in either assay system was thought to be related to its prolonged circulatory half-life and possibly also to lack of direct effect of tannation on the intrinsic activity of the PMS molecule.
