Abstract
Experienced teachers in both elementary and secondary schools can depend on encountering children's mistakes like those in figure l. Why are these and other mistakes like them so pervasive that every teacher recognizes them? Could it be the incorrect methods children use were inadvertently taught to them? Evidence gathered by the authors suggests this is the case. Keywords
