Attenuation of travelling waves in single-phase high-voltage cables

Abstract
From the viewpoint of protection against overvoltages, it is often desirable to know the attenuation of travelling waves in high-voltage cables. In the paper, the attenuation due to the combined effect of dielectric losses in the cable insulation and the skin effect in the core and sheath is calculated. The results are in good agreement with measurements on a number of cables. With the magnitude and frequency characteristics of the dielectric losses in modern high-voltage cables, these losses are of importance for the amplitude attenuation only for a combination of short pulses and long cables. In most cases, the skin effect will be the most important factor for the attenuation.
