Abstract
Aerobic incubation of epinephrine with a contractile protein extract of bovine uterine muscle resulted in the formation of epinephrine oxidation prod-ucts which in turn inhibited the adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase) activity of the extract. The autoxidation of epinephrine in the absence of the extract also resulted in products which caused ATPase inhibition. The oxidation products were estimated as adrenochrome for a prelimi-nary evaluation of the inhibition although it was recognized that other oxidation products were probably present. A 4.4 x 10- 6[image] concentration of oxidation products caused a 27% inhibition of ATPase activity and detectable inhibition was observed even at smaller concentrations. No inhibition of ATPase activity was found attributable to epinephrine itself. A possible physiological importance of this inhibition relative to uterine motility might be suspected. Keywords
