Abstract
Putative natural hybrids between Helianthus annuus and H. argophyllus are reported from e. Texas. These presumed hybrids are found to be similar in appearance to the artificial F1 hybrid between these 2 closely related spp. The F1 hybrid shows some sterility but is more highly fertile than any of the other interspecific hybrids in the annual sunflowers. Examination of meiosis in F1 plants indicates that the two spp. probably differ by two trans-locations. The artificial backcross plants are very close to the recurrent spp. in appearance and can be distinguished from them only after detailed comparisons. The difficulty of recognizing introgressants in nature is pointed out. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
