Endocrine Tumors of the Ovary

Abstract
The tumors of the ovary which produce endocrine effects upon the [female] organism as a whole are discussed. They consist in those designated as "feminizing." the granulosa and theca cell tumors, which result in precocious puberty, meno-metrorrhagia, increase in size of the breasts and postmeno-pausal bleeding; the "masculinizing" tumors, which consist in the arrhenoblastoma, adrenal rest tumor, lutein cell tumor, "luteoma," and luteinized tumors, resulting in hyper-trichosis. voice changes, amenorrhea, enlargement of the clitoris, hypertension, etc.; those producing effects other than feminization or masculinization including struma ovarii, dysgerminoma, chorionepithelioma, and Brenner tumor. The importance of hormonal investigations of the host are stressed both before and after operation, as well as upon the tumor tissue removed, so as to help in the clarification of this most complex subject. The origins, development, pathology, clinical symptoms and treatment of the tumors are also described.
