Abstract
High resolution infrared spectra of the 1−←0+ and 1+←0− ν2 vibration‐inversion bands of H3O+ have been observed in the ac glow discharge by using tunable diode lasers and the velocity modulation technique. The two band origins were found to be at 954.4003(25) and 525.8237(13) cm−1 for the 1−←0+ and 1+←0− bands, respectively. The band origins, rotational constants, and observed relative band strengths are compared with predictions based on ab initio theory. The discharge chemistry of H3O+ is discussed with reference to the observed line strength‐gas composition relation and known ion–molecule reactions. Keywords
