Abstract
The field of interstellar molecules is reviewed. Following an historical introduction to the subject, current observations of atoms and molecules are discussed and the different types and complexity of interstellar molecules examined. The habitats of these molecules-so called dense interstellar clouds-are considered. The chemistry producing and depleting interstellar molecules in dense clouds is then discussed in some detail. Models that utilize the chemistry thought to occur in dense clouds as input and provide calculated molecular concentrations as output are examined, and the successes and failures of current models elucidated. Keywords
