Abstract
What has been learned thus far of the natural history of bacterial variants suggests that their typical lack of cell wall may account for both their relative nonpathogenicity under certain conditions and their reversion to pathogenicity in other circumstances. By assembling data on relapsing infections, hospital-based clinicians can contribute importantly to clarifying the role of the variants in chronic disease. Keywords
