Abstract
Safety measures instituted in the Tuberculosis Unit, Communicable Disease Center, U. S. Public Health Service, on an empirical basis are as follows: Thorough instruction in aseptic handling of specimens, cultures, animals, and surroundings; a medical and health program which includes a complete physical examination, chest X-ray, tuberculin testing, and mental hygiene; all transfers of cultures are made under an exhaust hood; all equipment is used, and all animals are handled, according to established procedures of avoiding infection; materials, equipment, and surroundings are decontaminated as required; methods of avoiding contamination of person are stressed; and various miscellaneous safety measures, such as provision of adequate restroom and shower facilities, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, etc., are in effect.Keywords
